"It was a difficult decision"
The Horovatin family has worked in the B.C. forestry industry for four generations. Logging is an enormous part of who they are as a family. That’s what made it so hard to say goodbye when they closed-up shop and sold their entire fleet in Ritchie Bros. May 2020 Chilliwack auction.
“It was a difficult decision to make,” said Scott Horovatin. “My dad, Jerry, started this company with my grandfather, Phil, back in 1971. My great grandfather was also in logging, so this was an emotional journey.”
“Ritchie Bros. handled it perfectly”
Horovatin Enterprises Ltd. was based in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1971, the stump to dump logging contractor has been working in the Okanagan region of the province for four decades.
“We primarily bought new equipment but have worked with Ritchie Bros. several times through the years,” said Scott. “Growing up in Kelowna, my grandfather knows the Ritchie brothers from way back and we feel strongly that Ritchie Bros. has set the standard for how to conduct an equipment auction.”
Horovatin Enterprises sold approximately 50 items in Ritchie Bros.’ Chilliwack auction on May 20, 2020, including feller bunchers, log loaders, skidders, excavators, bulldozers, trucks, and more. Due to risks surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the auction was conducted with online-bidding only.
“It was a stressful situation, but Ritchie Bros. handled it perfectly,” said Scott. “There was a wealth of information and pictures online. I received lots of phone calls from interested bidders and the results were exceptional.”
“They took care of our fleet like it was their own”
Sales highlights from the Horovatin equipment fleet included a 2018 Tigercat L855E tilter feller buncher (Lot 259) that sold for CA$525,000 (US$376,635); a 2016 Link-Belt 3740 processor (Lot 262) that sold for US$320,000 (US$229,568); and a 2015 Tigercat 875 short wood log loader (Lot 269) that sold for CA$285,000 (US$204,459).
“The whole team at Ritchie Bros. was wonderful and they took care of our fleet like it was their own,” said Scott. “We are indebted to them. This wasn’t easy for my parents, my wife, and I, but Ritchie Bros. gave us the support we needed every step of the way. Thank you, Ritchie Bros.”
